African Ocean Week: Moroccan Minister Holds Bilateral Talks to Strengthen Blue Economy Cooperation with African Nations

As part of the “African Ocean Week,” Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries, Rural Development, Water, and Forests, Mohammed Sadiki, held a series of bilateral discussions on Monday in Tangier with fisheries ministers from several African countries to strengthen South-South cooperation aimed at achieving inclusive growth and a sustainable blue economy.

The talks, conducted separately with ministers from Senegal, Guinea Conakry, Libya, Madagascar, and Sierra Leone, focused on issues related to sustainable fishing, aquaculture, and the protection of marine ecosystems.

These discussions are part of joint efforts to enhance food security and promote sustainable development in African coastal communities.

In a statement to the Moroccan News Agency (MAP), Sadiki emphasized that these meetings, held on the sidelines of African Ocean Week, focus on advancing the blue economy and boosting climate resilience, highlighting the importance of sharing expertise and collective action to address common challenges.

The meetings also underscored the importance of strengthening African countries’ capacities in marine resource governance and developing aquaculture, which is seen as a promising sector to address the deficit in seafood products and improve consumption across the continent.

Sierra Leone’s Minister of Fisheries and Marine Resources, Princess Dugba, highlighted the significance of exchanging best practices in the fisheries and blue economy sectors, expressing her country’s interest in drawing inspiration from successful experiences and attracting more investments.

Senegal’s Minister of Fisheries and Maritime Infrastructure, Fatou Diouf, praised the strong relationship between Morocco and Senegal in the fisheries sector and expressed her desire to enhance cooperation between the two coastal nations.

Madagascar’s Minister of Fisheries and Blue Economy, Mahatante Tsimanaoraty Paubert, highlighted the importance of benefiting from Morocco’s experience in training technicians and developing the seafood industry.

Meanwhile, Guinea’s Minister of Fisheries and Marine Economy, Fatoumata Camara, stressed the need to update bilateral agreements and expressed her country’s desire to enhance cooperation in training and technology exchange.

Sadiki also met with Libya’s Minister of Marine Resources, Adel Sultan, where they discussed ways to boost bilateral cooperation in fisheries and marine resource management.

Sadiki concluded his talks with a meeting with Ahmedou Mustapha Ndiaye, the World Bank’s Regional Director for the Maghreb and Malta, where they explored new opportunities to finance blue economy projects in Africa.

The African Ocean Week, taking place from October 7 to 10 in Tangier, focuses on promoting the blue economy in Africa and brings together ministers, experts, and representatives of international organizations to discuss marine sustainability issues.
