The General Command of the Royal Moroccan Armed Forces announced in a statement that a Royal Navy coast guard patrol intercepted a small boat carrying 54 migrants from sub-Saharan African countries on Sunday, approximately 83 kilometers northwest of Tan-Tan port.
The statement clarified that among the rescued migrants were 7 women and one minor, noting that they had intended to reach the Spanish Canary Islands in an attempt at irregular migration.
The statement added that all the rescued individuals were in good health, having received necessary medical care aboard the coast guard vessel before being safely returned to Tan-Tan port.
The same source indicated that the migrants were handed over to the Royal Gendarmerie to complete the usual administrative procedures in such cases.
This operation comes as part of the ongoing efforts by Moroccan authorities to combat irregular migration and protect lives at sea, especially with the increase in migration attempts via the dangerous sea route to the Canary Islands.
