The American magazine Global Finance has ranked Abdellatif Jouahri, Governor of Bank Al-Maghrib, among the best central bank governors in the world in its latest annual ranking.
Jouahri received an “A” grade, making him the only governor from the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region to be included in the top 10 of this ranking titled “Central Banker Report Cards 2024”.
This ranking, published annually by Global Finance since 1994, evaluates central bank governors from nearly 100 key countries, territories, and districts, as well as the European Union, the Eastern Caribbean Central Bank, the Bank of Central African States, and the Central Bank of West African States.
Joseph Giarraputo, publisher and editorial director of Global Finance, stated that central banks have “led the war against inflation in recent years, using interest rate hikes as their main weapon.” He added that countries around the world are now seeing tangible results of these efforts, with inflation having decreased significantly.
Giarraputo noted that the magazine’s annual reports honor central bank governors “whose strategies have surpassed those of their peers thanks to their originality, creativity, and tenacity.”
Global Finance’s grading system uses a scale from “A” to “F”, taking into account performance in areas such as inflation control, economic growth objectives, currency stability, and interest rate management. An “A” represents excellent performance, while an “F” indicates complete failure.
Along with Jouahri, other central bankers who received an “A” grade include Roberto Campos Neto (Brazil), Rosanna Costa (Chile), Harvesh Kumar Seegolam (Mauritius), Lesetja Kganyago (South Africa), Nandalal Weerasinghe (Sri Lanka), and Nguyen Thi Hong (Vietnam).
The full report and list of grades will be published in Global Finance’s October issue, as well as in the digital version on the magazine’s website.
