The Moroccan capital, Rabat, witnessed tense events today, Wednesday, following an attempt by health sector employees to organize a national protest march. According to local sources, the security forces intervened to prevent the unauthorized march by using water cannons to disperse the protesters.
Reports indicate that the authorities used force and water cannons to disperse the demonstrators, who were mostly doctors, nurses, and technicians working in the health sector.
The protesters had gathered in front of the Istiqlal Party headquarters in Bab El Had Square, raising slogans against government policies. Despite being notified by the authorities that the march was unauthorized, the demonstrators insisted on proceeding with their protest, leading to increased tension and skirmishes with the security forces.
The protesters sharply criticized Health Minister Khalid Ait Taleb, accusing him of failing to manage the sector and demanding his resignation. They also condemned what they described as the “excessive use of force” by the security apparatus.
This protest comes in the context of a series of unprecedented strikes that the health sector has witnessed for weeks. The national union coordination in the health sector, representing eight unions in the Ministry of Health and Social Protection, called for this march in protest of what they see as the government’s disregard for their demands and failure to implement previous agreements.
These events indicate ongoing tension between health sector workers and the Moroccan government, with escalating demands to improve working conditions and implement previous agreements. It remains unclear how the situation will develop in the coming days amid this escalation.
