The Ministry of Islamic Affairs and Endowments in the Kingdom of Morocco announced today, Saturday, that tomorrow, Sunday, July 7, 2024, will be the first day of Muharram and the beginning of the new Hijri year 1446.
The Ministry clarified in an official statement that it had observed the crescent of Muharram after sunset on Saturday, 29 Dhu al-Hijjah 1445 AH, corresponding to July 6, 2024 CE, confirming that the crescent was sighted in accordance with Islamic law requirements.
The statement read: “The Ministry of Islamic Affairs and Endowments informs citizens that it has observed the crescent of Muharram for the year 1446 AH, after sunset on Saturday, 29 Dhu al-Hijjah 1445 AH, corresponding to July 6, 2024 CE, and the crescent has been confirmed to be sighted in accordance with Sharia. Therefore, the first of Muharram is tomorrow, Sunday, July 7, 2024 CE.”
The statement also included a prayer for the new year to be blessed for the Moroccan monarch King Mohammed VI, Crown Prince Moulay Hassan, and the rest of the royal family, as well as for the Moroccan people and the entire Islamic nation.
With this announcement, Morocco and the Islamic world welcome a new Hijri year. Mosques and religious institutions across the kingdom are expected to hold special events and activities to mark this occasion.
