Official Figures: Morocco Secures the Largest Share of Spanish Gas, Ahead of Portugal and France

Morocco’s imports of natural gas recorded a notable decline in November 2025, falling by 14% month-on-month to 840 gigawatt-hours (GWh), compared with around 976 GWh in October, according to recent data released by a specialized energy platform.

Despite this monthly decrease, indicators show a positive annual performance. Total gas imports over the first eleven months of 2025 rose by 4.5%, reaching 9.46 terawatt-hours (TWh), compared with 9.05 TWh over the same period in 2024. This reflects a general recovery in demand throughout the year, despite month-to-month fluctuations.

A Diversified Logistics Route to Secure Supplies

The data indicate that Morocco relies on a multi-stage logistics mechanism to meet its gas needs. This involves importing liquefied natural gas (LNG) from international markets, regasifying it at specialized terminals in Spain, and then transporting it to Morocco via the Maghreb–Europe Gas Pipeline, which was previously used to carry Algerian gas.

In this context, official statements by the Ministry of Energy Transition and Sustainable Development have been limited to noting that the Kingdom imports LNG from international sources, without providing detailed information on the main suppliers.

Multiple Sources and a Long-Term Agreement

The energy platform revealed that LNG supplies destined for Morocco come from several international sources, notably Russia and the United States, in addition to strategic volumes secured by Shell under a long-term agreement signed in July 2023.

Under this agreement, concluded with the National Office of Electricity and Drinking Water (ONEE), Morocco is to receive around half a billion cubic meters of LNG per year for 12 years, a move aimed at strengthening supply security and stabilizing the national energy system.

Morocco: The Leading Destination for Spanish Gas

Figures published by CORES (the Spanish Corporation for Strategic Reserves of Petroleum Products) show that Morocco topped the destinations for Spanish natural gas exports in November, accounting for 41.5% of total exports, with a volume of 840 GWh.

Portugal ranked second with a 15.1% share, followed by France in third place with 6.3% of total Spanish gas exports.

Monthly Fluctuations Throughout 2025

Statistics highlight clear fluctuations in Morocco’s gas imports during 2025. Imports started at relatively low levels in January (around 672 GWh), before gradually recovering and peaking in July and August, at close to 992 GWh each month. This was followed by a downward trend, culminating in the decline recorded in November.

According to observers, this trajectory reflects the interaction between domestic demand and the international energy context, as well as seasonal factors linked to consumption patterns and electricity generation.
