Law No. 23-66 Sparks Professional Protest… Tangier Bar Association Announces Comprehensive Work Stoppage and Court Session Boycott

The Tangier Bar Association has announced a professional protest action, including a comprehensive suspension of legal services and a boycott of court sessions, scheduled for 15, 16, 20, 21, 28, and 29 January 2026. This move comes in protest against what the Association described as the “dangerous provisions” contained in Law No. 23-66.

According to available information, this decision is based on the Association’s view that the law undermines guarantees related to lawyers’ immunity and the independence of the profession, with potential direct repercussions on the conditions under which legal defense is practiced and on the guarantee of a fair trial, as reflected in the slogans raised during this protest action.

The stoppage is expected to cover all courts within the territorial jurisdiction of the Tangier Bar Association, with the suspension of legal services and a boycott of court sessions on the announced dates, as part of a unified protest program representing an institutional expression of the profession’s stance on the draft law in question.

This development comes at a time when the professional arena is witnessing an intensifying debate over the contents of Law No. 23-66, amid calls from professional bodies to reconsider several of its provisions, in order to ensure a balance between the requirements of regulating the profession and safeguarding the independence of legal defense, as well as protecting litigants’ rights.
