The Association of Bar Associations in Morocco has announced a decision to carry out a comprehensive suspension of professional services on Thursday and Friday, January 8 and 9, 2026, in protest against what it described as a “non-consensual” version of the draft law regulating the legal profession, which is currently undergoing the approval process.
The decision was announced in a statement issued by the Association’s Executive Office following a remote meeting held on January 6, 2026. The meeting was dedicated to assessing the implementation of the previous comprehensive work stoppage and to discussing developments related to the inclusion of the draft law on the agenda of the upcoming Government Council meeting scheduled for Thursday, January 8, 2026.
According to the statement, the decision entails the suspension of the official duties of bar associations during the two specified days, with full participation by female and male lawyers in implementing the stoppage and adhering to their professional institutions, as outlined in the document.
The statement also indicated that the Executive Office discussed protest steps it believes should be taken to confront what it considers a “fait accompli” imposed by the current trajectory of the draft law. It announced readiness to engage in escalatory actions in parallel with the outcome of discussions on the bill.
In the same context, the Association announced plans to organize a large-scale national sit-in, the date and venue of which will be announced at a later time, while emphasizing the continued convening of the Executive Office to monitor developments related to the issue.
According to the statement, this move comes in response to the inclusion of the draft law on the legal profession on the agenda of the Government Council, prompting professional bodies to express their positions regarding the methodology of drafting and deliberation, and to reiterate their demand for consensus in the formulation of legislation governing the profession.
The newspaper notes that the above information falls within the framework of a professional statement issued by the Association of Bar Associations in Morocco, while respecting the right of other concerned parties and institutions to express their views and provide clarifications.
