Journalistic and Trade Union Bodies Examine Updates to the Law on Reorganizing the National Press Council in a Consultative Meeting

The headquarters of the Socialist Union of Popular Forces in the capital Rabat hosted a consultative meeting on Friday, bringing together the party’s First Secretary Idriss Lachgar and representatives of several trade union and professional bodies operating in the press and publishing sector. The meeting was dedicated to discussing recent developments related to the draft law on reorganizing the National Press Council.

According to information shared during the meeting, the gathering provided a platform for exchanging views on legislative developments linked to Draft Law No. 25.026. Discussions focused on several issues concerning the future of the National Press Council, particularly its independence, governance mechanisms, and the implications of the proposed legal text for the principles of professional self-regulation, press freedom, and freedom of expression.

The meeting was attended by representatives of a number of professional and trade union organizations, including the National Union of the Moroccan Press, the Moroccan Federation of Newspaper Publishers, the National Union of Press, Media and Communication affiliated with the Moroccan Labor Union, the National Union of Media and Press affiliated with the Democratic Confederation of Labour, as well as the Moroccan Confederation of Newspaper and Digital Media Publishers.

In their interventions, participating bodies expressed their positions on the proposed legislative project, stressing the need for broad public debate given its direct impact on the press and publishing sector. Observations were also raised regarding the drafting process of the bill, the extent to which professionals’ proposals were taken into account, and references were made to opinions and remarks issued by several national advisory institutions.

For his part, Idriss Lachgar indicated—according to accounts from the meeting—that the Socialist Union of Popular Forces continues to monitor this issue from its political and legislative role. He emphasized the importance of involving professional stakeholders in the drafting of laws regulating the sector and strengthening the role of the legislative institution in debating and improving related legal texts. He also underlined the need to respect established democratic norms in the law-making process, particularly for legislation related to public freedoms and regulated professions.

The meeting concluded by underscoring the importance of continuing dialogue and consultation among all concerned parties, in order to address the issues raised within an institutional framework and contribute to shaping a legislative approach that enjoys broader consensus within the professional community, while balancing legal regulation with the guarantees of freedom and independence of journalistic work.
