Morocco to Lead the Governing Board of a UN Institute for Lifelong Learning Affiliated with UNESCO

Morocco has been elected to chair the Governing Board of the UNESCO Institute for Lifelong Learning (UIL), represented by Zohour Alaoui, Ambassador of the Kingdom of Morocco to Germany, for the 2026–2028 term.

The election was unanimous among board members at the conclusion of the 21st meeting of the Governing Board, recently held in Hamburg. The same meeting also saw the election of Epsy Campbell Barr, Vice President of the Republic of Costa Rica and former Minister of Foreign Affairs, as Vice Chair of the Governing Board of the UN institute.

According to official sources, this election reflects international recognition of Morocco’s engagement in education and lifelong learning, as well as its strengthened presence within UNESCO and its specialized institutes.

This development also comes in the context of Morocco’s contribution to several related international initiatives, notably hosting the Seventh International Conference on Adult Education (CONFINTEA VII) in Marrakech in June 2022. The conference resulted in the adoption of the Marrakech Framework for Action and the establishment of the African Institute for Lifelong Learning.

On the sidelines of the same meeting, the Institute’s Governing Board announced the accession of the cities of Oujda and Casablanca to UNESCO’s Global Network of Learning Cities, in recognition of their efforts to promote the right to lifelong learning at the local level.

It is worth noting that the cities of Fes, Agadir, and Essaouira had already joined this global network in 2023.
