Beneficial rains boost Morocco’s dam reserves, but picture remains uneven: some basins near full while others face sharp deficits

Recent rainfall affecting several parts of Morocco has helped raise the national dam fill rate to 34.73%, equivalent to about 5.821 billion cubic meters of stored water, according to updated figures released by the Ministry of Equipment and Water.

The same data highlight significant disparities among the country’s dams: while some small and mid-sized dams have reached full capacity, several major dams remain below 25%, reflecting uneven rainfall benefits across different basins and regions.

In the Loukkos basin, Oued El Makhazine Dam reached 81.09% with reserves exceeding 545 million cubic meters, while Dar Khrofa Dam stood at 79.32%.

In the Sebou basin—which covers an important part of the Fès–Meknès region—several dams recorded better levels compared to last year. Al Wahda Dam (Morocco’s largest) reached 44.16%, representing about 1.555 billion cubic meters, while Idriss I Dam remains around 400 million cubic meters, with most other dams in the basin still below the halfway mark.

In the Oum Er-Rbia basin, Al Massira Dam continues to show a notable water deficit, with its fill rate not exceeding 3.4%—around 91.44 million cubic meters out of a total capacity of 2.656 billion cubic meters.

In the Bouregreg basin, Sidi Mohammed Ben Abdellah Dam reached 82.88%, while Tamesna Dam did not exceed 24.22%, bringing the basin’s total stored water to approximately 848 million cubic meters.

Indicators for the Souss-Massa basin remain modest, including Mohammed Mokhtar Soussi Dam (10.61%), Imi El Kheng Dam (14.58%), and Youssef Ben Tachfine Dam (13.13%), levels that contrast with higher readings in other basins such as Ziz–Guir–Ghéris and Drâa–Oued Noun.

Overall, the figures point to a relative improvement in stored water following the latest rainfall, while challenges persist due to uneven replenishment across basins and major dams—underscoring the need for close monitoring and rational water management.
