The Office of Foreign Exchange announced, in a statement issued on December 5, a new amendment entering into force that allows citizens and residents to purchase foreign currency directly via international bank cards and electronic payment terminals (TPE) at authorized dealers.
These new measures, according to the statement, aim to strengthen the operational system for currency exchange and keep pace with the shift toward more modern and secure payment solutions, while maintaining full compliance with international standards for combating money laundering and terrorism financing.
Under this decision, currency exchange operators authorized by the Office of Foreign Exchange are entitled to accept payment via international bank cards (Visa, Mastercard…) in exchange for delivering foreign currency in cash or loading it onto prepaid payment cards in dirhams.
These operators are also allowed to provide their customers with payment cards loaded with Moroccan dirhams during foreign currency purchase operations, providing an additional flexible and secure option.
The Office of Foreign Exchange confirmed that these new facilities come within the framework of supporting the development of financial services in the Kingdom, while enhancing transparency and electronic tracking of all operations, through reliance on third parties subject to the same vigilance and control rules.
The statement concluded that “activating these facilities contributes to strengthening the national system while supporting the establishment of a more integrated and transparent payment environment.”
This measure, which enters into force immediately, is expected to facilitate foreign currency purchase operations at hundreds of authorized exchange offices across the national territory, especially for travelers, tourists, and professionals, while ensuring complete and electronic tracking of every transaction.
