With the approaching start of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco, the Royal Moroccan Football Federation announced a positive step in the recovery journey of star Achraf Hakimi, captain of the national team, from his recent injury. The player, who plays for French club Paris Saint-Germain, is expected to arrive in Morocco next Tuesday, accompanied by a member of the Parisian club’s medical staff, to complete his rehabilitation program and prepare himself for the continental tournament.
The injury dates back more than a month, when Hakimi suffered a serious sprain to his left ankle during a UEFA Champions League match between Paris Saint-Germain and Bayern Munich on November 4, following a violent tackle by Colombian player Luis Díaz, which resulted in his expulsion. The player left the field in tears, raising great concern among the fans of the Lions and the Parisians, especially with the approaching tournament to be held in Morocco from December 21, 2025 to January 18, 2026.
The Parisian club confirmed that the injury would keep Hakimi away from the fields for several weeks, but the player, winner of the 2025 African Golden Ball, has shown exceptional determination in his rehabilitation program, spending about six hours daily in training. The club recently released a video showing Hakimi training on grass, indicating positive progress in his condition and strengthening hope for his return for the opening match against Comoros on December 21.
According to press reports from reliable French sources, such as RMC Sport, the Parisian club and the Moroccan national team are working side by side to ensure Hakimi’s full fitness return before the tournament, focusing on coordination between the two medical staffs to avoid any complications. Journalist Fabrice Hawkins explained that “Hakimi will return to Morocco in the coming days to continue rehabilitation and prepare for the Africa Cup of Nations, and will be accompanied by a member of the club’s medical staff to ensure continuous follow-up.” He added that the goal is to make the player ready to return to the Parisian club after the tournament ends, while being careful not to expose him to exhaustion.
Hakimi, 27 years old, is a fundamental element in the Moroccan national team lineup, having contributed to the team reaching the 2022 World Cup semi-finals and helped Morocco qualify for the 2026 edition with a 100 percent success rate. With Morocco hosting the tournament for the first time since 1988, fans place great hopes in the team winning the title, which is strengthened by Hakimi’s role in defense and attack.
The Moroccan national team, which is classified in Group One alongside Mali, Zambia, and Comoros, shares high expectations of achieving a historic accomplishment, especially after an absence from the title since 1976 in Ethiopia. Hakimi’s recovery constitutes a race against time, as the technical staff led by Walid Regragui hopes for his participation from the second or third match, at least, to strengthen offensive and defensive options.
It should be noted that the Royal Football Federation is closely monitoring the player’s condition, emphasizing that his return is “non-negotiable” to achieve continental ambitions, while the player continues to share positive updates via social media, which boosts the morale of the fans.
