Bab Melilla: Foiled Smuggling of Over 64,000 Rivotril Pills… Judicial Investigation Opened Against Moroccan Driver

Fes News – Melilla
December 6, 2025

National security services at the Bab Melilla border crossing foiled a smuggling operation of a large quantity of hallucinogenic pills on Friday evening, December 5, 2025, totaling 64,922 pills of Rivotril (a narcotic substance and psychotropic drug subject to international control), which were carefully hidden inside a light vehicle with foreign registration.

The vehicle was driven by a Moroccan citizen and was seized during routine border control procedures, where thorough inspection revealed the narcotic pills distributed in secret compartments within the vehicle’s structure.

Judicial Investigation Opened Under Public Prosecutor’s Supervision

The suspect was immediately arrested and placed under police custody under the supervision of the competent Public Prosecutor’s Office, to deepen the judicial investigation which aims to:

  • Uncover all potential ramifications of the case inside and outside Morocco.
  • Identify the detainee’s connections to international drug and psychotropic substance trafficking networks.
  • Determine all possible accomplices involved in this criminal activity.

Rivotril: A Dangerous and Prohibited Substance

Rivotril (active ingredient: clonazepam) is classified on the list of psychotropic substances subject to international control and is used medically in specific cases. However, its smuggling and consumption outside the medical framework poses a major threat to public health and is often exploited in addiction circles.

This operation once again confirms the vigilance of national security services in confronting cross-border smuggling networks, particularly at the border crossings of the two occupied enclaves of Ceuta and Melilla.

“Fes News” will follow developments in the judicial investigation and any new updates in this case.
