Enhancement of Sports Infrastructure in El Menzel City in Sefrou Province: Launch of Construction Work on Two New Playing Fields

El Menzel, Sefrou Province – In a positive step toward enhancing local sports activity, work began today, Wednesday, December 3, 2025, on leveling the land located in Taayacht on the Ouled Meryane neighborhood road in El Menzel city, with the aim of constructing and equipping two neighborhood playing fields on an area estimated at 2,500 square meters. This project comes within the framework of a partnership between the El Menzel Municipal Council and the Sefrou Provincial Council, as announced by the Municipal Council President via a post on social media.

Project Details and Objectives

According to the official post, the project will include covering the two fields with artificial turf and equipping them with basic equipment to accommodate sports activities for youth and children, contributing to encouraging sports practice and reducing the gap in sports infrastructure in the area. The President added that this achievement is part of ongoing efforts to improve public services, emphasizing the importance of local partnerships in achieving sustainable development.

He also indicated that a similar project will be launched soon, God willing, involving the addition of two more neighborhood fields in the area located in Ain Kbir, known as “Akna,” in partnership with the Ministry of National Education, Preschool Education, and Sports. This announcement reflects the commitment of relevant authorities to expanding sports opportunities in rural and mountain areas of the Fes-Meknes region.

Current Reality and Historical Challenges

Currently, El Menzel city has only one neighborhood playing field, highlighting an acute shortage in sports facilities compared to increasing demand from residents, especially youth. In the 1970s, the city had a large football field, built on land that includes the Youth House, the Water and Electricity Office, the telecommunications company headquarters, and the Health Center. It also had a municipal swimming pool, which was later covered by the telecommunications company to be converted into a parking area for the municipal fleet, leading to the gradual deterioration of sports facilities.

These historical challenges, which led to the loss of most sports facilities, make today’s projects a decisive step toward reform. Residents hope that this approach will contribute to reviving the city’s sporting spirit, with a focus on sustainability and continuous maintenance.

Importance of the Project in the Regional Context

This achievement comes at a time when the Fes-Meknes region is witnessing accelerated efforts to enhance sports infrastructure, as in the inauguration of two neighborhood fields in Sefrou city itself in January 2025, financed by the local commune, on an area of 2,250 square meters. The El Menzel project is an extension of this dynamic, contributing to achieving the goals of the National Sports Strategy, which focuses on remote areas to promote public health and social integration.

Expectations and Calls for Expansion

With the start of work, observers expect the project to be completed in the coming months, providing safe spaces for sports practice and organizing local events. Local activists are calling for intensifying partnerships to revive other projects, such as restoring swimming pools or building multipurpose halls, to enhance the role of sports in social development in El Menzel.

This development constitutes evidence of commitment to improving public services, amid residents’ hopes for a more vibrant sporting future.
