Fez: Grand Stadium of Fez to Undergo Extensive Rehabilitation After AFCON in Preparation for the 2030 World Cup

Fez – As part of the national preparations to host the 2030 FIFA World Cup in partnership with Spain and Portugal, the Grand Stadium of Fez (Stade de Fès) will undergo a second phase of comprehensive rehabilitation and expansion work immediately after the conclusion of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON). Its seating capacity will increase from the current 35,000 spectators to 55,800 spectators by 2028, according to plans approved by the responsible authorities.

The stadium completed its first phase of renovation in June 2025, at a cost of approximately 600 million Moroccan Dirhams (MAD). This phase included infrastructure modernization, removal of the running track to improve visibility, installation of 500 surveillance cameras, and renovation of the changing rooms and media areas, making it ready to host the 2025 AFCON matches. However, it is noted that the stadium faces some controversy regarding its potential inclusion in the official list of venues for the 2030 World Cup, as Argentine media reports suggested that the International Federation of Football Associations (FIFA) might exclude it, necessitating accelerated efforts to ensure compliance with international standards.

The second phase of work, which will commence after the African Cup, includes adding extra stands, improving lighting and sound systems, enhancing transportation links surrounding the stadium, in addition to integrating cultural elements that reflect traditional Fassi heritage, transforming the stadium into a symbol of integration between sport and national heritage. This project is part of a broader national dynamic aimed at developing sports facilities in the Kingdom, with a focus on sustainability and innovation, to strengthen Morocco’s position as a global destination for major sporting events.
