Turkish security forces managed to save a Moroccan couple who were held hostage in the Eyüpsultan district of Istanbul after a police operation ended their suffering that lasted four days at the hands of a dangerous gang.
The details of the incident date back to October 8, when cries for help in Arabic were heard from a window of a building under construction, shouted by a Moroccan woman aiming to attract the attention of passersby and alert the authorities. The woman did not hesitate to jump out of the window despite the risks, which led to her sustaining minor injuries.
When the police arrived at the scene, investigations revealed the presence of the Moroccan man and his fiancée, both handcuffed and footcuffed, after the gang had detained them and demanded a ransom of $18,000 from their families for their release.
The operation resulted in the arrest of an 18-year-old Afghan youth who was found in possession of the victims’ phones. He was referred for investigation while the security authorities continue to pursue the rest of the gang members to uncover all the details of the incident and ensure that all involved are brought to justice.
This incident highlights the risks that foreigners may face in certain situations and confirms the vigilance of Turkish security agencies in dealing with this type of crime.
