The Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced on Wednesday that Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov will hold talks with his Moroccan counterpart Nasser Bourita as part of a “regular and constructive” political dialogue between the two countries. The discussions will cover bilateral, regional, and international issues of mutual interest, foremost among them the Western Sahara file.
Maria Zakharova, spokesperson for the Russian Foreign Ministry, stated during a press briefing in Moscow, as reported by the Russian news agency Interfax, that the two sides will discuss “the current situation and prospects for the gradual development of bilateral relations in detail.” She added that the agenda will also include “current issues on the regional and international agenda, focusing on the situation in the Middle East and North Africa, as well as in the Sahara and Sahel regions.”
Zakharova emphasized the “regular and constructive nature of the Russian-Moroccan political dialogue,” noting that the meeting reflects the desire of both countries to deepen bilateral coordination on sensitive regional files and expand economic and diplomatic cooperation, in line with the historic relations linking Rabat and Moscow since the 1960s.
Sources from Russia confirmed that the Moroccan foreign minister will visit Moscow in his capacity as co-chair of the Russian-Moroccan Intergovernmental Commission for Economic, Scientific, and Technical Cooperation, where he will participate in its eighth meeting chaired by Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Patrushev. The meeting will discuss promising areas for developing relations between the two countries, focusing on expanding trade and economic cooperation.
This meeting comes just days after Lavrov stated that Russia is ready to support Morocco’s autonomy initiative to resolve the Western Sahara dispute, provided there is consensus among all parties and oversight by the United Nations. Accordingly, this visit is viewed as an important step in enhancing the multifaceted partnership between Morocco and Russia and contributing to lasting peace and stability in the Middle East and North Africa, as well as in the Sahara and Sahel regions.
Historically, Rabat and Moscow have maintained deep diplomatic ties since the 1960s, with cooperation spanning economic, political, and cultural fields, marked by regular high-level meetings aimed at strengthening this relationship.
Based on this background, the Lavrov-Bourita meetings are expected to deepen coordination and joint action on issues of shared interest, especially in light of current regional and international challenges.
