The case of the death of the child Mohammed Bouyselkhen, known in the media as “the shepherd boy,” witnessed new developments on the morning of Wednesday, October 15, with the judicial investigator at the Court of Appeal in Errachidia ordering the exhumation of his body from its resting place in the Aghbalo cemetery in Midelt province. This decision came in response to a request submitted by the victim’s mother, Touda Owais, through her lawyer Sabri Al-Hou, seeking a precise medical autopsy to determine the true causes of death.
The body was transferred to the city of Casablanca for advanced medical examinations as part of ongoing preliminary investigations aimed at uncovering the circumstances of the death. The investigation took place in the presence of Royal Gendarmerie officers from the Midelt unit, the Errachidia regional gendarmerie, the commander of the Midelt gendarmerie unit, and the victim’s family.
It is worth noting that this case has sparked wide controversy since the body of the child was found on June 16, 2025, in a kneeling position with a rope tied around his neck in the Aghbalo Asrdan area. Initially, the suicide hypothesis was circulated, but the child’s family categorically rejected this narrative, confirming that Mohammed exhibited no psychological issues or circumstances that would push him to commit suicide and that he had previously received threats.
A Truth and Accountability Committee that includes several branches of the Moroccan Association for Human Rights applied pressure to investigate the case thoroughly, demanding a comprehensive inquiry involving all parties, including judicial police officers who inspected the crime scene, individuals named in complaints, and social media accounts that circulated conflicting accounts about the incident.
The Public Prosecutor’s Office at Errachidia Court of Appeal later confirmed the reclassification of the case from a suicide to a homicide, marking an important development in the judicial process and granting the case a serious investigative status.
The case of Mohammed Bouyselkhen stands as a stark example of the challenges facing child rights protection in Morocco, calling for continued pressure on authorities to ensure justice and full disclosure of the truth.
