Motasébi Renews Confidence in Morocco: The Upcoming AFCON Will Be Historic and Unprecedented

Patrice Motsepe, President of the Confederation of African Football (CAF), reaffirmed his belief that Morocco will host an unprecedented edition of the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON). He emphasized that CAF is actively coordinating and cooperating with the Moroccan government to organize the best tournament in the history of CAF competitions.

Speaking at the CAF General Assembly on Monday, Motsepe said, “I have received questions about the current situation in Morocco and our stance on it. I want to make it very clear that Morocco is our first, second, and third choice to host the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations finals.”

The South African official added, “We are confident that CAF will work closely with the Moroccan government, officials, and citizens to organize the most successful and outstanding edition of the Africa Cup of Nations ever.”

Motsepe attended the assembly alongside notable figures including Fouzi Lekjaa, President of the Royal Moroccan Football Federation, and Gianni Infantino, President of FIFA, in the capital of the Democratic Republic of Congo, Kinshasa.

The CAF President did not express any concerns about the recent youth protest movements in some Moroccan cities demanding reforms in education and health sectors, nor about any potential security impact on the continental tournament, highlighting the absence of any disruptions or incidents that could affect Morocco.

The assembly also included a speech by Lekjaa, who reviewed the federation’s financial performance for the 2023/2024 season and highlighted CAF’s financial aspirations in the coming years.

The Africa Cup of Nations finals will take place from December 21, 2025, to January 18, 2026, featuring 24 teams competing across nine stadiums in six Moroccan cities: Rabat, Casablanca, Tangier, Fez, Marrakech, and Agadir.

This will be Morocco’s second time hosting the AFCON, after the 1988 edition when Cameroon won the title and the Moroccan team reached the semifinals, marking one of the most notable achievements in the national team’s continental history.
