The Digital Content Observatory, a civil society body specializing in monitoring the Moroccan digital space, has demanded the strictest legal penalties against the inciters and group administrators on the “Discord” app who were proven to be involved in spreading calls for sabotage and destabilization.
In a strongly worded statement, the observatory called for the mandatory enforcement of digital identity verification for users of the app within Morocco, considering this measure already implemented in many developed countries to curb cybercrimes. The observatory also directly urged the app’s management to reveal the identities of the accounts involved in “digitally misleading youth,” threatening to call for the app’s ban in Morocco if it fails to cooperate with judicial and security authorities.
These demands come amid a growing national debate on the need to regulate the operations of international digital platforms. The Moroccan government is preparing a new legal framework inspired by international legislation to enhance platform responsibility in monitoring illegal content and combating fake news and incitement to violence. These calls aim to put an end to the exploitation of digital platforms as safe havens for those inciting chaos and threatening societal security.
