Gen Z Riots: 193 Individuals Prosecuted for Vandalism and Violence

Zakaria Laaroussi, a magistrate and head of the unit overseeing the enforcement of repressive measures and judicial decisions at the Public Prosecution Presidency, announced that 193 individuals are being prosecuted following incidents of violence, destruction, and incitement that occurred recently in several cities across the kingdom.

In a press statement, Laaroussi specified that an investigation request has been filed against 18 suspects, 16 of whom were detained by order of the investigating judge.

Additionally, 19 other suspects are being prosecuted by competent prosecutors while in custody due to the severity of their actions, which include common criminal offenses, with some acting under the influence of narcotics.

Furthermore, 158 individuals are being prosecuted while free, and 24 cases have been dropped, he added, noting that several individuals were released after their interrogation reports were completed.

Actions Unrelated to the Right to Protest

The magistrate emphasized that these unauthorized protests involved behaviors completely alien to the spirit of peaceful demonstration.

The incidents included various forms of violence and destruction, such as:

  • Throwing stones at security forces
  • Destruction of citizens’ property
  • Damage to vehicles and businesses
  • Acts of looting
  • Arson of state-owned vehicles
  • Vandalism of public property
  • Acts of violence and obstructing traffic

Investigations Under Prosecution Supervision

Given the criminal nature of these acts that endangered citizens’ security, judicial investigations have been launched under the supervision of competent prosecutors in accordance with applicable laws, Laaroussi stated.

Investigations revealed the involvement of several minors, who have been referred to juvenile courts for appropriate measures.

Online Incitement and Digital Manipulation

Investigations also uncovered that some individuals circulated digital content on social media aimed at:

  • Inciting citizens to take to the streets
  • Sharing false images of foreign protests to mislead the public, increase views, and generate financial gains

Ongoing Investigations

The magistrate indicated that investigations continue to identify and apprehend others involved in the incidents of the evening of September 30.

The suspects will be referred to the competent prosecutors, who will take appropriate legal action based on the investigation outcomes.

Public Prosecution’s Commitment to Security and Freedoms

Laaroussi concluded by reaffirming that prosecutors are committed to preserving the security and safety of citizens and their properties, as well as maintaining public order, while safeguarding rights and freedoms in accordance with the Constitution and law.

He affirmed that judicial authorities will continue to enforce the law firmly and rigorously to protect citizens’ security and national stability.
