Morocco-Spain: Over 11 Tons of Cannabis Seized… Hidden in Melons

The Spanish National Police announced on Tuesday the seizure of more than 11 tons of cannabis during two separate operations carried out within less than a week in Málaga and Algeciras (southern Spain), thanks to close cooperation with Morocco’s General Directorate for National Security (DGSN).

These operations, supervised by the Special Anti-Drug Prosecutor’s Office of the National Court and that of the Campo de Gibraltar, led to the dismantling of a criminal organization operating between Spain and Morocco and the arrest of ten individuals, all placed in pre-trial detention, according to a statement by the Spanish police.

The first operation, conducted on September 5, intercepted a van that had arrived at the port of Tangier, transporting 1.8 tons of hashish concealed inside furniture and hidden compartments. Four suspects were arrested, and the seizure also included over 14,000 euros, four vehicles, and eight mobile phones.

On September 10, a refrigerated truck coming from Algeciras was intercepted in Málaga carrying 9.3 tons of cannabis hidden among pallets of melons. The truck, its trailer, and two escort vehicles were seized, and six people were arrested.

The investigation began last July, following an exchange of information between the Moroccan DGSN and the Spanish National Police, which enabled authorities to identify this criminal organization and prepare the interception operations, the statement concluded.
