Minister of Equipment and Water, Nizar Baraka, announced on Saturday the imminent opening of the new land border crossing at Amgala with Mauritania, expected to become operational within two weeks. This announcement is part of ongoing efforts to strengthen connectivity and logistical resources between Morocco and African countries, enhancing economic and trade relations.
During a meeting held by the Istiqlal party parliamentary group in Es-Smara under the theme “Southern Provinces: A Continuous Development Dynamics,” Baraka stressed that 2025 should be a decisive year for the final resolution of the Moroccan Sahara issue. He emphasized that the Moroccan autonomy initiative is the only realistic and credible solution to end the dispute over the Sahara.
The meeting was attended by prominent party figures, including Hamdi Ould Rachid, President of the Laâyoune Communal Council, Mohamed Ould Rachid, President of the Chamber of Advisors, along with several elected officials, ministers, and members of the Istiqlal leadership.
Baraka pointed out that the current international situation calls for moving toward a final settlement of this artificial conflict. He affirmed that autonomy under Moroccan sovereignty enjoys increasing support from major international powers and offers a just and sustainable framework.
This statement comes a few weeks before the United Nations Security Council meeting scheduled for late October, where the Secretary-General’s report on MINURSO will be examined and a decision on renewing its mandate will be made.
Separately, Baraka described the Amgala border crossing with Mauritania as a “strategic corridor,” confirming that it will help strengthen Morocco’s connection with Africa, facilitate trade flows, and ease the movement of people and goods between the two countries.
The Minister also revealed that rehabilitation work on the road linking Laâyoune to Smara is set to begin in 2026, alongside major ongoing projects including the Tiznit-Dakhla highway, the Atlantic port of Dakhla, housing projects aimed at combating slum conditions, and programs related to renewable energy and phosphate valorization.
Nizar Baraka added that the Istiqlal party governs more than half of the municipalities in the southern provinces, reflecting the people’s trust and placing significant responsibility on the party to represent them and defend the country’s territorial integrity.
He concluded by affirming the royal vision for integrated development in the Sahara, which has led to notable achievements in infrastructure and the connection of isolated areas.
Baraka called to make 2025 “the year of resolution” for the Sahara issue, sending a strong political message from Morocco, which continues to increase investments in its southern provinces, while the international community increasingly recognizes the autonomy plan as a legitimate framework for a lasting and stable solution.
