Fès – In a critical health initiative, the Regional Directorate of Health and Social Protection in the Fès-Meknès region held an extensive meeting on Wednesday, September 17, 2025, chaired by Dr. Salima Saasaa. The session was attended by a representative from the WHO Regional Office for the Eastern Mediterranean, along with experts and officials from the Ministry of Health and specialized regional staff.
The meeting featured participation from the coordinator of the integrated regional plan for combating sexually transmitted infections, AIDS, and viral hepatitis for the period 2024-2030. Also present were public health and healthcare service officials, heads of vital units such as pharmacy, supply, communication, and maternal and child health departments. During the session, progress achievements were presented along with opportunities and challenges facing the rollout of this ambitious plan. The ensuing discussions highlighted a collective commitment to effective implementation that reflects local realities, supported by various institutional and civil partners.
Following the interactive session, the delegation conducted field visits to the reference center for viral hepatitis treatment, the Obstetrics and Gynecology Department at Al Ghassani Hospital, and the Tajmouati Maternity Home in Fès. The WHO representative reviewed efforts by medical teams in early pregnancy and birth screening, ensuring administration of the first dose of the hepatitis B vaccine to newborns within hours of birth, and directing infected cases to specialized referral centers.
The visit program also included the Prevention and Treatment Center affiliated with the African Organization for the Fight Against AIDS in Fès, where the delegation observed activities carried out by associations working on prevention and screening, especially among high-risk groups.
The visit concluded with an exchange of views and appreciation of efforts made at the regional level, accompanied by a clear call to broaden partnerships to include the private sector and unify national, regional, and local efforts to achieve the 2030 vision of a Morocco free from sexually transmitted infections, AIDS, and viral hepatitis B.
