Fes Old Medina Traders Complain of Disputes with Endowment Authority; Case Escalates to Judiciary

The Head of the Commercial Activities Rehabilitation Committee in Fes Old Medina sent an official letter to the President of the Chamber of Commerce, Industry, and Services of the Fes-Meknes region, informing him of the grievances expressed by a group of traders regarding their legal status due to ongoing disputes with the Endowment Authority (Nidarat al-Awqaf).

According to the source, these traders operate shops owned by the Endowment Authority and have voiced their dissatisfaction with lawsuits filed against them related to rental contracts. Several traders have been summoned by the courts to appear at a hearing scheduled for September 29 to review their cases.

The letter confirmed that traders attribute some of these disputes to mismanagement or lack of clarity in the contracts. While they do not oppose fulfilling their financial obligations, they demand urgent intervention to find fair solutions that respect the particular nature of commercial activities within the Old Medina.

The Committee head also requested the Chamber of Commerce to intervene with the Regional Director of Endowments and Islamic Affairs to open dialogue with the affected traders and reach amicable settlements before the situation worsens and enters a judicial path that could threaten the stability of hundreds of families dependent on these businesses.

This file comes amid broader discussions about the future of commerce in Fes Old Medina, where the relationship between traders and the Endowment Authority remains one of the key challenges, especially given increasing calls to rehabilitate the sector and ensure stable professional and social conditions for traders.
