Morocco Celebrates the 46th Anniversary of the Recovery of Oued Eddahab

The Moroccan people are celebrating this Thursday the 46th anniversary of the recovery of the Oued Eddahab province, a heroic chapter in the process of completing Morocco’s territorial integrity, marked by ongoing national mobilization around the Kingdom’s foremost cause.

On August 14, 1979, religious scholars, notables, and tribal chiefs from the Oued Eddahab province went to the Royal Palace in Rabat to present their allegiance pledge to the late King Hassan II and reaffirm their unwavering loyalty to the Glorious Alaouite Throne.

Through this solemn and patriotic act, the inhabitants of Oued Eddahab signaled that they would never sell out their Moroccan identity, affirming their attachment to the homeland and its sacred territorial integrity from Tangier to Lagouira, despite adversaries’ maneuvers.

This historic moment was immortalized by the Royal speech in which the late Sovereign stated: “Today, on this blessed day, we have received your pledge of allegiance, which we will preserve and cherish as a sacred trust. From now on, you must honor this pledge. As for us, it is also our duty to guarantee your defense and security and to work tirelessly for your well-being. So, my dear sons, welcome to your homeland. We thank the Almighty for His blessings in uniting the south of our country with its north and restoring the blood ties among its sons.”

During this ceremony, King Hassan II also distributed weapons to the tribal representatives, a strong and symbolic gesture underlining the continuing struggle to defend territorial integrity and establish security in the recovered southern provinces.

A few months later, the architect of the Glorious Green March and the sons of the Oued Eddahab province met again during the historic visit of the late Sovereign to Dakhla.

This visit further reaffirmed the perfect harmony between the glorious Alaouite Throne and the people of the southern provinces, a steadfast link that forms the cohesion of the nation and thwarted all plots hatched by enemies of Morocco’s territorial integrity.

Since then, the Kingdom has worked to promote the economic and social development of its southern provinces, aiming to integrate them into a global and sustainable development process.

The celebration of the recovery anniversary of Oued Eddahab is an opportunity to recall the high significance of this event, which embodies the province’s people’s unwavering loyalty to the Sovereign and the Alaouite Throne and their constant mobilization to defend the Kingdom’s territorial integrity. This is further exemplified by the recovery of the city of Tarfaya on April 15, 1958, then Sidi Ifni on June 30, 1969, and other parts of the Moroccan Sahara through the Green March on November 6, 1975.

Continuing on the path traced by His august father, King Mohammed VI devotes special attention to the southern provinces, ensuring their economic rise and reinforcing national mobilization to foil enemies’ conspiracies against the Kingdom’s territorial integrity.

Development efforts have continued in this cherished part of the Kingdom, aiming to establish it as a genuine economic hub. More than four decades after liberation, the southern provinces and regions of Morocco are witnessing sustained dynamism across various sectors, supported by a series of structural and multisectoral projects.

The commemoration of the 46th anniversary of Oued Eddahab’s recovery also clearly expresses the Moroccan people’s will and their ongoing mobilization to consolidate national achievements and defend the Kingdom’s territorial integrity, as well as their commitment to the Moroccan autonomy plan for the southern provinces.

To mark this landmark event in Morocco’s history, the High Commission for Former Resistance Members and Liberation Army Veterans (HCAR) will organize a meeting on Thursday at the headquarters of the Wilaya of Dakhla-Oued Eddahab, during which tributes will be paid to former combatants and liberation army members, and financial aid will be provided to members of the Resistance families.

To commemorate this national epic, various educational and cultural events focusing on honoring historical memory are planned throughout the regional and provincial Delegations and local HCAR offices, as well as in national resistance and liberation memory spaces, in partnership with ministerial departments, public institutions, elected bodies, and civil society associations.
