Earthquake at the Ministry of Health: 30 regional and provincial hospital directors dismissed

On September 10, 2025, the Moroccan Ministry of Health, led by Minister Amin Al-Tahraoui, announced a major administrative restructuring involving the opening of a competitive nomination process for 30 director positions in regional and provincial hospital centers nationwide. This step included relieving the current officeholders of their positions, either through dismissal or voluntary resignation, as well as filling several vacant posts. Media outlets described the move as an “administrative earthquake” within the ministry, aimed at enhancing managerial efficiency and accountability in public healthcare facilities.

The appointments affect three regional hospital centers in Agadir, Beni Mellal, and Laayoune, while the remaining positions are distributed among provincial hospital centers across the country. Notably, five of these positions in the southern provinces are impacted, specifically in the regional hospital center of Laayoune and the provincial centers in Boujdour, Smara, Assa, and Tan-Tan. This regional focus reflects the ministry’s commitment to strengthening healthcare infrastructure in remote and strategically important areas.

The ministry did not provide detailed reasons for the individual dismissals, but informed sources suggest the initiative responds to ongoing administrative performance evaluations amid broader health sector reforms. The nomination process will proceed through formal applications, with selections based on merit and expertise. Further details regarding timelines and eligibility criteria are expected to be announced soon by the ministry’s official channels.
