Morocco has decided to suspend the import of live poultry, meat, and all poultry-derived products from Portugal after highly pathogenic avian influenza cases were detected in a laying hen farm near Lisbon.
The National Office for Food Safety (ONSSA) announced in an official letter addressed to Portuguese health authorities that the decision also includes suspending imports of eggs and animal feed related to the poultry sector.
This measure follows the announcement by Portugal’s Directorate-General of Health about the emergence of a highly virulent avian influenza outbreak at a laying hen farm near Lisbon, raising concerns over the potential spread of the disease to other countries.
In a statement to “Al Alam,” Youssef Al Aloui, President of the Professional Federation of Morocco’s Poultry Sector, clarified that the federation does not import breeder hens from Portugal but rather from Spain and France. He added that the ONSSA letter to Portugal is a precautionary protocol, emphasizing that Morocco has thousands of farms dedicated to poultry farming, each employing a veterinarian responsible for immediately reporting any avian influenza cases. Failure to report such cases could lead to strict penalties, including revocation of professional certification.
