A former terrorist prisoner calls on Spain to supply weapons to Rif separatists to wage a proxy war against Morocco

Ali Arras, a former prisoner on terrorism charges and responsible for arms supply within the Moroccan Mujahideen Group, has called on the Spanish authorities to provide separatist forces affiliated with the so-called “Rif National Party” with weapons and ammunition to carry out attacks targeting Morocco and its strategic interests.

These serious statements came during Arras’ participation in a gathering of several separatists linked to the “Rif National Party,” recently held in the city of Girona, Spain. These unprecedented threats sparked a wave of anger and condemnation from many Moroccan human rights and civil society groups, especially after Arras openly and explicitly demanded that the Spanish authorities equip him with the necessary weapons to target Morocco.

Sources present at the meeting reported that Arras’ request for military support stems from his intention to wage a “proxy war” on behalf of Spain, aiming to pressure Morocco and hinder its claims over the occupied cities of Ceuta and Melilla.

The gathering also included several separatists, among them supporters of the Polisario Front and a number of Algerian nationals who provide financial and moral backing to the separatist cause. This raises serious questions about the external funding and support these groups receive in their efforts against Morocco.
