After Causing Controversy, Public Prosecutor’s Office Denies Temporary Release for Ibtissam Lachgar

Rabat, Morocco – In a new development in the “insulting the divine” case, the Public Prosecutor’s Office at the Rabat Court of First Instance today, Wednesday, rejected the defense’s request for activist Ibtissam Lachgar to be granted temporary release. The court decided to postpone a decision on the request until next week, keeping Lachgar in detention over the widely controversial case.

The decision came after Lachgar’s defense team, consisting of three lawyers led by Naïma El Khellafi, presented various arguments to justify the request for temporary release. However, the Public Prosecutor’s Office stood firm in its decision.

The defense revealed that the prison administration decided to place the activist in solitary confinement, without allowing her to mix with other inmates. This decision is said to be negatively affecting her psychological well-being, especially as she is battling cancer.

This case is being closely followed by the public, particularly as the charges against the activist, which relate to her linking “the divine to homosexuality,” are considered a precedent in Moroccan jurisprudence. The next court session is expected to bring significant developments, with great anticipation for the court’s decision on the temporary release request.
