In a move that affirms Morocco’s commitment to sustainable development in its southern provinces, the city of Dakhla is witnessing significant progress on a massive strategic project aimed at addressing water scarcity and boosting agricultural growth through seawater desalination and renewable energy.
As of the latest data dated August 13, 2025, the construction of a giant seawater desalination plant, located north of the city of Dakhla, has reached approximately 85% completion, placing the project just a step away from becoming fully operational.
This ambitious project is part of a comprehensive vision to transform the region and consists of three main integrated components. The most prominent is an integrated wind farm, which has been fully completed and is now operational. It provides all the necessary energy to power the desalination unit, making it a unique model for the optimal use of resources.
In parallel, the irrigation network designed to cover 5,000 hectares of high-productivity agricultural land has also been completed. This network, with a total length of 113 kilometers, boasts a flow rate of 1 cubic meter per second, ensuring a regular and efficient water supply to the agricultural lands.
Equitable Distribution of Water Resources
Once fully operational, this project is set to provide an annual water supply of 37 million cubic meters of desalinated water. Approximately 7 million cubic meters will be allocated to supply drinking water to the city of Dakhla and its surrounding areas, while the remaining 30 million cubic meters will be directed to support irrigation efforts and develop the agricultural sector in the region.
A Strategic Investment to Overcome Challenges
Valued at nearly 2 billion dirhams, this project is considered a strategic investment in sustainable development. It leverages renewable energy as an alternative solution to mitigate the depletion and salinization of fossil groundwater in the area.
This project is part of Morocco’s broader efforts to enhance water security and increase agricultural productivity in its southern provinces, overcoming the challenges posed by climate change and regional conditions.
Economic Revival and Promising Opportunities
This transformative project is expected to create significant employment opportunities and stimulate economic growth in the region. This will position Dakhla as a leading hub for innovative water management and green agriculture, reinforcing its status as a promising economic center on Morocco’s map.
