The Province of Chefchaouen Fights a Battle on Two Fronts: Forest Fires and the Flies of Rumor… Intensive Efforts to Contain the Crisis

Chefchaouen – Since the evening of Tuesday, August 12, 2025, the province of Chefchaouen in northern Morocco has been grappling with a large-scale forest fire crisis that threatens its vegetation cover and the lives of local residents. The fire, whose intensity was exacerbated by strong winds and high temperatures, spread to cover vast areas of forest extending between the towns of Bab Berred and Dardara, in addition to agricultural fields and olive trees. This has caused significant material losses and immense suffering for the region’s inhabitants.

Various Moroccan state apparatuses intervened in a swift and coordinated manner. Civil Protection teams demonstrated great courage in confronting the flames with water hoses, while pilots of the “Canadair” aircraft participated in perilous aerial missions to douse the fire from the sky, despite the difficult weather conditions. The Royal Armed Forces, specifically the military engineering units, and the Royal Gendarmerie also contributed to evacuation operations and security support, protecting residents of threatened areas and ensuring the stability of the situation.

Alongside the fight against the fire, Chefchaouen is facing another battle against what is known as the “electronic flies,” who have exploited the crisis to spread rumors and false news aimed at confusing public opinion and sowing chaos. Despite these attempts, official authorities have been keen to stress that accurate and reliable information is only disseminated through official, accredited channels. This move aims to raise awareness and strengthen the spirit of national solidarity.

These dual confrontations—against both the flames and the danger of misinformation—highlight Morocco’s capacity for comprehensive mobilization and coordination among the various components of the state to protect its lands and people from natural disasters and security threats. Today, Chefchaouen is not just a stage for raging fires, but a symbol of national unity and collective resilience that reflects an unwavering determination.

Firefighting and civil defense units continue their intensive efforts under harsh conditions, while hope remains pinned on an improvement in weather conditions and the convergence of all efforts to overcome this ordeal with the least possible losses, preserving the safety of both people and nature.
