Fez – August 12, 2025
The trial of an individual with numerous prior convictions resumed today, Tuesday, before the Misdemeanor Court at the Fez Court of First Instance. The defendant is facing charges related to fraud and impersonating a profession for which the law sets specific conditions for practice.
According to judicial sources, the court is expected to hear from one of the plaintiffs who was summoned during the previous hearing. The accused had allegedly promised the plaintiff that he would intervene with a judicial official to secure the release of his detained son.
Investigation findings revealed that the defendant frequently loitered around the Court of First Instance and the Court of Appeals in search of victims. He exploited their difficult circumstances or the legal troubles of their relatives, offering his purported services in exchange for sums of money.
The case came to light when the accused approached a citizen who was with his grandson near the area designated for presenting suspects to the Public Prosecutor’s Office. The defendant inquired about the reason for his presence, and the man explained he was waiting for his son’s court session. The defendant offered him a bottle of water, left his phone number, and departed. A short while later, he called the man, claiming to be a police officer who could work to secure his son’s release.
However, one of the court’s private security guards alerted the plaintiff that the man was known for fraudulent activities. The guard then escorted him to one of the King’s Prosecutors (deputy public prosecutor), who ordered security elements to apprehend the suspect. He was arrested near the Hassan II University Hospital, where two mobile phones were found in his possession.
In an official report, the defendant confessed to the charges against him. He stated that on the morning of July 26, 2025, he went to the vicinity of the Palace of Justice looking for victims. He approached the plaintiff, presenting himself as a security officer, and claimed to know the King’s Prosecutor and his deputies. He alleged he could intervene to secure the release of the plaintiff’s son in exchange for a sum of money. A meeting point near the university hospital was set to receive the payment, leading to his arrest.
After being presented to the King’s Prosecutor, it was decided to prosecute him in a state of pretrial detention on charges of “impersonating a title or profession regulated by law regarding the conditions for its practice, with the aggravating circumstance of recidivism, multiple counts of fraud, and attempted fraud.”
This case emerges amid a rising trend of fraud and scams targeting citizens in the vicinity of judicial institutions, prompting judicial and security authorities to intensify their efforts to combat this phenomenon and protect citizens from falling victim to it.
