Major Security Appointments in Morocco: Hamouchi Boosts Efficiency, Places Youth and Women in Leadership Roles – Fez-Meknes at the Forefront

RABAT – In a strategic move aimed at renewing security leadership structures and enhancing their effectiveness, the Director General of National Security, Abdellatif Hammouchi, announced today, Wednesday, August 6th, a new list of appointments covering 24 senior security officials to key leadership positions within the central and regional directorates of Morocco’s National Security.

Leadership Promotions & Women’s Empowerment:
The appointments include the promotion of experienced security cadres to the first level of decentralized police leadership. Notably, new Deputy Governors of Security were appointed in Beni Mellal and Taza, alongside an Acting Head of the Provincial Security District in Khenifra. In a significant step towards gender inclusion, the appointments placed women at the helm of key central and decentralized security services: a new Chief was appointed for the “GESTARR” Police Management Information System under the General Security Directorate, and a new Head for the Provincial Social Work Service at the El Jadida Provincial Security.

Fez-Meknes Region Takes Center Stage:
The Fez-Meknes region featured prominently in these appointments, reflecting its strategic importance. Key leadership positions within the region were entrusted to new officials, including heads of services for Public Security, Judicial Police, General Intelligence, and Social Work in cities like Fez, Meknes, Sefrou, and Taounate. These appointments are crucial for enhancing security coordination and responsiveness across this vital region.

Preparation for Major Sporting Events:
In preparation for major sporting events, notably the Africa Cup of Nations 2025 and the FIFA World Cup 2030, the appointments included placing specialized security cadres in charge of Sports Security Teams under the Fez and Tangier security prefectures. This ensures robust security planning for these high-profile international tournaments hosted in Morocco.

Wider Regional Appointments:
Beyond Fez-Meknes, the appointments extended to other key cities, placing trust in security officials to lead various services in Ouarzazate, Marrakech, Guelmim, Tangier, Errachidia, Kenitra, Agadir, Salé, and Casablanca. These cover critical areas including Public Security, Judicial Police, General Intelligence, and Social Work.

Strategic Vision for Security Modernization:
These appointments are part of a continuous dynamic of work within the General Directorate of National Security, aimed at:

  • Enhancing the efficiency and productivity of police human resources.
  • Ensuring rotation in leadership positions to inject fresh expertise and perspectives.
  • Assigning field management to highly trained and qualified security cadres capable of implementing strategic plans.
  • Strengthening citizen security and guaranteeing the safety of their property.
  • Empowering youth and women by providing equal leadership opportunities, reflecting confidence in their capabilities.

These new appointments underscore the National Security’s commitment to modernizing its leadership structures based on criteria of competence and integrity, with a clear priority on empowering young cadres and women to take on leadership roles. This serves the vision of reform and modernization led by Director General Abdellatif Hammouchi and strengthens citizen trust in Morocco’s security institutions, particularly within strategically vital regions like Fez-Meknes.
