ALGIERS – Donald Trump’s former advisor, Messaoud Boulus, has reaffirmed the United States’ “recognition of Morocco’s sovereignty over its Sahara” and its “full support” for Morocco’s autonomy plan as the “exclusive basis” for resolving the Sahara conflict, in an interview published by Algerian newspaper El Watan today.
Boulus’ statements—delivered from the heart of Algiers where he met President Tebboune and Foreign Minister Ahmed Attaf—came in response to a question about Washington’s position on the Sahara issue. He confirmed that US Secretary of State Marco Rubio “reaffirmed the United States’ recognition of Moroccan sovereignty over Western Sahara,” describing Morocco’s autonomy proposal as “the serious, realistic, and implementable plan” that constitutes “the sole foundation for a just and lasting solution.”
Boulus clarified that his country “continues to believe that genuine autonomy under Moroccan sovereignty is the only viable solution,” noting that Secretary Rubio renewed Trump’s call “for all parties to immediately engage in substantive discussions, using Morocco’s autonomy proposal as the sole framework for negotiations.” He emphasized that the United States “will contribute to facilitating progress toward this goal.”
The Trump advisor expressed “gratitude for the opportunity to meet President Tebboune and the Algerian Foreign Minister to discuss the United States’ commitment to achieving a long-awaited peaceful settlement,” highlighting “the joint efforts Washington is making toward that end.”
These statements emerge amid escalating diplomatic tensions between Rabat and Algiers over the Sahara issue, marking the first time a high-ranking US advisor has articulated Washington’s official position from the heart of the Algerian capital—adding significant diplomatic momentum to Morocco’s US-backed stance.
