Jerada: Dangerous Rise in Oued Mellou Water Level… Authorities Urge Immediate Evacuation from the Watercourse

Jerada – The Jerada region was placed on high security and civil alert this Sunday evening, following a significant rise in the water level of Oued Mellou. This came after heavy rainfall, accompanied by strong thunder, in the neighboring mountainous areas of Boulemane province.

According to local sources, the torrential rains that hit the province’s highlands, especially the upper areas of Jerada, led to the formation of flash floods which flowed directly into Oued Mellou. This caused a sudden rise in its level, carrying a heavy load of mud and sediment from the highlands. The wadi, which crosses several douars (villages) before flowing into the Moulouya River near the city of Jerada, now poses a clear danger to the surrounding areas.

In separate statements, residents of the douar “Sareef,” belonging to the Berkine municipality, confirmed that the water level had begun to rise rapidly, warning of the danger of the situation for neighboring douars such as “Tarka Oumadi,” “Bouhsan,” and “Agli.” For their part, local authorities and civil society actors have appealed to the residents of these areas, especially children and women, to immediately stay away from the wadi’s course and its banks, and not to attempt to cross it under any circumstances.

Official sources have stressed the need to exercise utmost caution, calling on the population to immediately report any dangerous situations through the available channels and to fully cooperate with civil protection teams and local authorities to ensure the safety of lives and property.

It is noteworthy that these sudden weather phenomena have become more frequent in recent years in the Eastern region, necessitating the strengthening of early warning mechanisms and the intensification of community awareness, especially during periods of severe weather disturbances.
