The Supreme Court of Quebec, Canada, issued a ruling today, Thursday, sentencing the Moroccan YouTuber residing in Canada, Hicham Girando, to one month of actual imprisonment, along with an obligation to complete 150 hours of community service and pay a fine of 10,000 Canadian dollars. This ruling follows a lawsuit filed by the Moroccan judge Abdelrahim Hanine after he was defamed in videos published on the YouTube platform.
The Digital Content Observatory praised this judgment, considering that the Canadian judiciary has set a commendable example in protecting individuals’ reputations and safeguarding rights in the digital space. The observatory confirmed that this step represents a victory for justice and ethical values in confronting defamatory and hateful discourse on digital platforms.
The observatory also added that this case reflects the necessity of confronting cyber extortion involving some content creators, calling for increased international coordination to combat cross-border digital crimes.
It is worth noting that Hicham Girando, who began his life in Canada as an immigrant, attempted to manage business ventures that failed before turning in recent years to publishing content containing false accusations and defamation against public figures. He has previously been subject to default judgments inside Morocco and abroad, the most recent being a Canadian ruling in favor of the Moroccan lawyer Adel Said Al-Mutairi.
