The Israeli military announced early Monday that it had conducted air and naval strikes targeting Houthi rebel infrastructure in Yemen, specifically in the port of Hodeidah and other areas under control of the Iran-backed insurgents, who retaliated by firing missiles toward Israel.
According to an Israeli military statement, the strikes targeted the Yemeni ports of Hodeidah, Ras Issa, and Salif, as well as the Ras Al-Kathib power plant.
Earlier, the Houthi-controlled Al-Masirah TV channel reported that the “Israeli enemy” was targeting the port of Hodeidah and confirmed bombings in the other locations mentioned by Israel.
The Israeli army accused the Houthis of using the targeted ports to transfer weapons supplied by the Iranian regime, which are then used for terrorist operations against Israel and its allies.
In Ras Issa port, Israel said it struck the cargo ship Galaxy Leader, which the Houthis seized in November 2023. According to the Israeli military, the rebels installed a radar system on the ship to monitor maritime traffic.
Hours later, the Israeli military detected two missiles launched from Yemen toward Israel, triggering air raid sirens in several locations. It did not immediately confirm whether the missiles were intercepted.
In a televised statement, Houthi military spokesperson Yahya Saree claimed responsibility for the missile launches, stating that among the targets was Ben Gurion International Airport, describing the strikes as “retaliation for the Israeli aggression.”
Since late 2023, the Yemeni insurgents have attacked dozens of vessels they believe are linked to Israel off Yemen’s coast, followed by attacks on American ships, before reaching a ceasefire agreement with Washington in early May to end weeks of U.S. bombings.
However, the Houthis pledged to continue targeting Israeli ships navigating the Red Sea in solidarity with Palestinians in the Gaza Strip, which remains a battleground in the ongoing war between Israel and Hamas, sparked by Hamas’s unprecedented attack on Israel on October 7, 2023.
On Sunday, a commercial ship was attacked in the Red Sea off Hodeidah, according to two British maritime security agencies, one reporting that the ship’s crew abandoned the damaged vessel.
These repeated attacks have led many shipowners to avoid the area, which accounts for about 12% of global trade, according to the International Chamber of Shipping (ICS).
The Yemeni insurgents have also carried out dozens of missile and drone attacks against targets inside Israel.
