Moroccan Weather Authority Warns of Intense Heatwave and Thunderstorms from Wednesday to Saturday

In an orange-level weather alert, Morocco’s General Directorate of Meteorology has announced a severe heatwave accompanied by “chergui” winds, expected to hit several regions across the country from Wednesday through Saturday.

Temperatures are forecast to reach between 43°C and 46°C in provinces including Tata, Zagora, Assa-Zag, Smara, Boujdour, Oued Ed-Dahab, and Aousserd throughout the four-day period.

Other areas such as Ouezzane, Sidi Kacem, Sidi Slimane, Meknes, Fès, Moulay Yacoub, Taounate, Khemisset, Khouribga, Béni Mellal, Fqih Ben Salah, Settat, Rehamna, Kalaat Sraghna, Marrakech, and Taroudant are expected to experience temperatures ranging from 42°C to 44°C, particularly between Wednesday and Friday.

Regions like Sefrou, El Hajeb, Khénifra, Azilal, Al Haouz, Tan-Tan, and Guelmim will see temperatures between 39°C and 42°C over the same timeframe.

The meteorological authority also forecasts intense thunderstorms—accompanied by hail and strong wind gusts—in provinces such as El Hajeb, Ifrane, Boulemane, Sefrou, Midelt, and Khemisset, between 2:00 PM and 8:00 PM, with rainfall ranging between 15 and 25 mm.

Separately, Aousserd Province is expected to see strong thunderstorms from 4:00 PM until midnight on Wednesday, with rainfall between 20 and 30 mm.

The General Directorate of Meteorology urges citizens to take necessary precautions amid extreme heat and unstable weather conditions in the coming days.
