The Court of Appeal in Fez issued today a verdict sentencing Reda Assal, the former president of the Jennan Al-Ward district, to two years of effective imprisonment in the “Urban Planning Scandals” case, which involves charges of embezzlement of public funds, bribery, and the issuance of administrative documents to unauthorized individuals.
This ruling came after Reda Assal, along with several other defendants including administrative officials, contractors, and brokers, were prosecuted on charges related to bribery, abuse of power, and forgery of administrative documents. The case sparked widespread controversy due to the irregularities detected in the management of urban planning affairs in the Jennan Al-Ward district.
The court had previously decided to postpone the trial session to June 10, 2025, to bring in the detained defendants from prison, in preparation for a detailed discussion of the case and the completion of judicial procedures.
This case is part of a series of judicial proceedings involving elected officials in the Fez region, as part of Morocco’s efforts to combat financial and administrative corruption. The Court of Appeal in Fez had previously upheld prison sentences in cases of embezzlement of public funds involving heads of municipalities.
This ruling reflects the Court of Appeal in Fez’s continued firm application of the law against those involved in financial corruption cases, underscoring the Moroccan judiciary’s commitment to promoting transparency and integrity in local governance.
