A fire broke out yesterday, Sunday, in the “Tarkantoshka” oasis located in the Chtouka Ait Baha province, resulting in damage to more than 6 hectares of palm trees, causing significant material losses in the area.
In a statement to the Moroccan News Agency (MAP), Ahmed Al-Fadhili, the regional director of the National Water and Forests Agency in Chtouka Ait Baha, confirmed that the civil protection teams and local authorities succeeded in fully controlling the fire, which was sparked by the recent heatwave affecting the region.
Al-Fadhili explained that firefighting efforts involved deploying various logistical means, including tanker vehicles and specialized equipment, as well as establishing firebreaks to prevent the flames from spreading to other parts of the oasis, which helped limit the damage.
Meanwhile, the National Water and Forests Agency has been issuing predictive maps since June 27 until July 4, based on scientific data, to accurately identify sensitive areas prone to forest fires nationwide, as part of proactive measures to combat this phenomenon.
In this regard, authorities have urged residents living near forested areas, workers in these zones, as well as tourists and visitors, to exercise utmost caution, avoid any activities that could trigger fires, and promptly report any smoke or suspicious behavior to local authorities.
