Unprecedented Heatwave Sweeps Across Morocco, Shattering Temperature Records Nationwide

Morocco – June 27–28, 2025 — A historic and extreme heatwave has gripped Morocco over the past two days, driven by intense “Chergui” winds — dry, hot easterlies — pushing temperatures to record-breaking levels across many regions of the country, including typically cooler coastal areas.

Record-Breaking Temperatures Across the Kingdom

  • Sidi Slimane topped national records with an unprecedented 47.1°C, among the highest ever recorded in the region.
  • Ben Guerir registered 46.1°C, surpassing its previous record of 45.3°C set in June 2023.
  • Taroudant wasn’t far behind, with a scorching 46.9°C.

Coastal Cities Hit Hard

Traditionally moderated by the Atlantic Ocean, even coastal cities were not spared:

  • Larache hit 43.8°C, breaking its previous record of 42.9°C set in June 2017.
  • Casablanca, the economic capital, recorded 39.5°C, exceeding the 38.6°C peak of June 2011.
  • Essaouira, known for its cool oceanic breezes, came close to breaking its historic record (39.4°C in June 1948), experiencing a thermal anomaly of more than 20°C above the seasonal average.

A Nationwide Phenomenon

Over 15 regions across Morocco surpassed 40°C, confirming the widespread and exceptional nature of the heatwave. Meteorologists and climate experts warn that this event is another clear indicator of accelerating climate change in North Africa.

Public Health Alerts and Safety Recommendations

Authorities have issued urgent health advisories, especially targeting the elderly and children, urging citizens to:

  • Avoid direct sun exposure during peak hours
  • Stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water
  • Refrain from strenuous physical activity during the hottest times of the day

The current heatwave underscores the growing frequency and intensity of extreme weather events in the region, calling for renewed focus on climate adaptation and resilience strategies.
