Progress on Construction of Rabat Al-Khair Dam on Oued Zeloul to Enhance Water Security and Renewable Energy in Sefrou Province

Construction works are advancing on the Rabat Al-Khair Dam, located on the banks of Oued Zeloul, a tributary of the Sebou River, approximately 9 kilometers from the city of Rabat Al-Khair in Sefrou Province. The project has reached about 10% completion to date and represents an ambitious effort to strengthen the region’s water infrastructure and meet growing demands for drinking water and irrigation.

The Rabat Al-Khair Dam aims to supply drinking water to the city of Sefrou and surrounding centers, as well as irrigate agricultural lands located downstream of the dam, thereby supporting local agricultural development. The dam will also contribute to hydroelectric power generation and protect nearby areas from flooding caused by heavy rainfall.

The project encompasses a large reservoir with a total capacity of 124 million cubic meters, backed by an investment of approximately 1.8 billion Moroccan dirhams. The Moroccan company STAM is overseeing the construction works, which began in May 2024 and are expected to last about 60 months.

The dam is being built as an earth-rock fill dam with a reinforced concrete facing, standing 76 meters tall and approximately 530 meters long at the crest, utilizing around three million cubic meters of fill material.

The dam is expected to generate significant economic and social momentum in Sefrou Province by ensuring sustainable water supplies for urban and rural areas and enhancing agricultural productivity through irrigation of vast farmland. The project also strengthens the region’s resilience against flood risks and enables the exploitation of water flows for renewable energy production, aligning with Morocco’s strategy to diversify its energy sources.

This project is part of the national strategy to reinforce water infrastructure, reflecting the high royal directives to accelerate the construction of large and medium dams, especially in regions with significant rainfall. It also embodies Morocco’s forward-looking vision for sustainable and integrated agricultural development, while ensuring water security and social stability.

The Rabat Al-Khair Dam represents a qualitative addition to Morocco’s water infrastructure, enhancing Sefrou’s capacity to address water scarcity and climate change challenges, while providing multiple development opportunities in water, agriculture, and energy sectors. This project is poised to become a true catalyst for economic and social development in the region in the coming years.
