ASEAN Secretary-General from Rabat: Strong Support for Morocco’s Sovereignty and Territorial Integrity

Rabat, Morocco – June 2025 – In a new affirmation of growing international support for Morocco’s territorial integrity, Kao Kim Hourn, Secretary-General of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), expressed firm support for respecting Morocco’s sovereignty and territorial unity during his first official visit to Morocco and Africa, taking place from June 24 to 26, 2025.

This position was outlined in a joint communiqué issued following his meeting with Nasser Bourita, Morocco’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation, and Moroccan Expatriates. Both sides reaffirmed their commitment to the principles of the Treaty of Amity and Cooperation in Southeast Asia, including the respect for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of states — a direct reference to Morocco being a fully recognized and appreciated partner within this vital regional bloc.

Expanding Cooperation with ASEAN Member States

The discussions highlighted promising avenues for cooperation between Morocco and ASEAN’s ten member states — Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, the Philippines, Brunei, Vietnam, Laos, Myanmar, and Cambodia. Kao Kim Hourn praised Morocco’s increasing presence within ASEAN structures, including the Mekong River Commission, the ASEAN Inter-Parliamentary Assembly, and the Southeast Asian Ministers of Education Organization (SEAMEO).

Moroccan Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita emphasized that strengthening ties with Asian groupings like ASEAN falls within the royal vision of diversifying partnerships and promoting effective and solid South-South cooperation.

Security and Defense Prospects

On the same day, Secretary-General Kao Kim Hourn also met with Abdeltif Loudyi, the Minister Delegate in charge of National Defense Administration. The two discussed potential cooperation in security and defense, reflecting the deepening multidimensional relationship between Morocco and Southeast Asia.

It is worth noting that the second session of the Morocco–ASEAN Joint Sectoral Cooperation Committee was held in Jakarta in November 2024, with Rabat set to host the third session in November 2025.
