Noticeable Drop in Chicken Prices in Morocco After Unprecedented Rise Before Eid al-Adha

Rabat – Fes News

Chicken prices in Morocco have witnessed a significant decline in recent days compared to the period preceding Eid al-Adha, which was marked by a sharp increase due to heightened demand for poultry meat.

Mustafa Montaser, President of the National Association of Poultry Meat Producers, confirmed that national production has reached record levels, with more than 11 million chicks produced weekly. This surge in production has contributed to a clear decrease in prices. He added that the wholesale price per kilogram of chicken at farms currently ranges between 11 and 11.5 MAD, while in Casablanca’s wholesale market, the price is around 12 MAD.

This price drop is attributed to reduced demand following the festive period, during which consumption of chicken rose notably. Montaser pointed out that the main beneficiaries of the previous price hike were not the breeders but rather the middlemen who purchased chicken at prices between 13 and 14 MAD and sold it to consumers for more than 22 MAD per kilogram.

On his part, Said Janah, Secretary-General of the Moroccan Association of Poultry Breeders, explained that the current supply exceeds demand, prompting some breeders to sell chicken at a loss of 2 MAD per kilogram. He also noted that the sector suffers from disorder and the continuing dominance of middlemen since the chick production stage, negatively impacting price stability.

Janah emphasized that local production covers more than 100% of market needs, but the rising costs of chicks and feed remain a major obstacle. The chick price has reached 6 MAD, whereas it should not exceed 3 MAD, and feed costs have risen to 4 MAD instead of 3.5 MAD.

Chicken prices had reached unprecedented levels before Eid al-Adha, with prices in Casablanca markets hitting around 23 MAD per kilogram, as explained by Mohamed Abboud, President of the National Association of Broiler Chicken Breeders. He attributed this to the high demand for poultry meat due to fewer animal sacrifices this year.

With expectations of increased demand during the summer wedding season, speakers stressed the need to regulate market consumption to maintain price stability, confirming that production will continue at the same pace to preserve balance.
