The Sebou Basin Agency has announced the launch of its 2025 awareness campaign aimed at educating the public about the dangers of swimming in reservoir lakes, especially during the summer season. This initiative forms part of ongoing efforts to raise awareness and prevent drowning incidents around the basin’s lakes.
The campaign specifically targets residents living near reservoir lakes within the basin, focusing on key weekly markets and rural community centers adjacent to major dams including Drab Sidi Abdeljalil, Talha, Meksi, Ait Yedine, and the Wali Woukri lake, as well as the dams of Al Wahda, Idriss I, Bab Louta, Sidi Chahid, and Qansra.
Recent years have seen a worrying increase in drowning accidents in these lakes, particularly among children and teenagers aged 10 to 17. Many of these incidents occur in unsupervised areas, where the calm appearance of the water belies the real and significant dangers beneath the surface.
The campaign will officially commence on Tuesday, July 1, 2025, at the weekly market in the Drab community near Al Wahda dam. It will be conducted in coordination with local authorities, territorial communities, civil protection services, and active civil society organizations in social and environmental fields.
Activities planned include awareness presentations, distribution of brochures and posters, interactive communication sessions, and the use of loudspeakers, promotional vehicles, and educational capsules to reach as many people as possible.
The Sebou Basin Agency emphasized that this campaign is part of its continuous efforts to reduce drowning incidents and promote a culture of safety and prevention among local residents and visitors alike.
