El Behalil, June 28, 2025 – The cultural association “Thaqafas,” in partnership with the Reading Network of Sefrou, is organizing a special symposium titled “Thinking from the Cave: Theoretical Intersections Between Architecture, Cultural Practices, and Identity Building in the Context of El Behalil.” The event will take place on Saturday, June 28, 2025, inside a prominent cave in the city of El Behalil, renowned for its unique cave dwellings in Morocco.
The symposium aims to bring together architects, anthropological researchers, cultural actors, and representatives of local communities to explore the caves of El Behalil not only as traditional dwellings but as vibrant spaces where cultural, social, and identity dynamics interact in a rich and distinctive manner.
The day’s activities will begin with an exploratory tour of the cave dwellings, followed by direct meetings with local residents and artisans to gain an in-depth understanding of the architectural and cultural heritage of the area.
In the afternoon, the program continues with a series of lectures and an interactive roundtable featuring prominent guests, including:
- Megumi Matsubara, an architect and artist known for her creative research linking architecture and the arts.
- Amin El Wakili, an architect and cultural activist interested in projects blending heritage and modernity.
- Mohamed Kamal El Marini, a community activist and independent researcher specializing in social dynamics and local heritage valorization.
- Souad El Maysour, a visual artist who will present a special installation.
- Mohamed Hamdouni, an anthropologist and researcher renowned for his work on Moroccan cultural practices, who will moderate the discussion.
