Amid ongoing geopolitical turmoil in the Middle East and its direct impact on global oil prices, Member of Parliament Fatima Tamni, from the Federation of the Democratic Left, submitted a written question to Minister of Energy Transition and Sustainable Development, Leila Benali, urging the government to restart the “La Samir” refinery and strengthen Morocco’s energy sovereignty.
Tamni argued that the international surge in oil prices — which rose by over 12% in recent hours due to the Israeli-Iranian conflict — will inevitably affect the national market, increasing the burden on citizens through higher fuel and essential goods prices.
She also pointed out that the Moroccan public constantly questions the mechanisms behind fuel pricing, criticizing what she called “the rapid reflection of global increases in local prices,” compared to the delayed or absent response when global prices drop — raising concerns about transparency in price-setting.
In this context, Tamni renewed her call to restart the La Samir refinery, describing it as a wasted national infrastructure asset that could help reduce Morocco’s dependence on international markets and cushion the impact of price volatility. She emphasized the refinery’s potential role in securing a significant portion of the country’s petroleum needs.
The MP posed several questions to the government, including:
- What proactive measures does the ministry intend to take to address global oil price fluctuations?
- Can the government implement a flexible pricing mechanism that reflects global decreases at the same pace as increases?
- What is the government’s official stance on restarting La Samir in light of the current situation, which clearly demonstrates the need for a national refining structure to support energy security?
This parliamentary move comes amid growing national debate over the complete liberalization of the fuel sector and the absence of a domestic refining facility. Political and labor circles continue to call for the revival of La Samir as a strategic and sovereign option.
