Gnawa Festival in Essaouira: A Cultural and Economic Lever Positioning Morocco at the Forefront of African Artistic Diplomacy

Naïla Tazi, producer of the Gnawa and World Music Festival in Essaouira, affirmed that this event, now in its 26th year, has become a benchmark for cultural and economic development, serving as a powerful lever for Moroccan diplomacy on the African and international stages.

In an exclusive interview with the Moroccan News Agency (MAP), Tazi emphasized that the festival demonstrates through its sustained commitment that culture is not a luxury but a strategic necessity. She highlighted its role in creating job opportunities and fostering confidence in the future, particularly within the cultural and creative industries sector.

According to the same source, the festival goes beyond music by contributing to reshaping African cultural dialogue. It highlights Morocco’s deep historical roots in the continent and sheds light on the shared African memory with a spirit of mutual respect and creative openness.

Tazi pointed out that the secret to the festival’s success lies in balancing homage to the “Gnawa Masters” art while embracing global music. Despite its expansion, the event has preserved its identity and promoted Gnawa’s authenticity on major international stages.

Furthermore, she underlined the importance of the Human Rights Forum organized within the festival’s activities. This forum has served as a platform for societal dialogue and reflection for 12 years, addressing fundamental issues concerning youth, migration, equality, and plural identities.

Additionally, Tazi highlighted the “Berklee at Gnawa Festival” program as a unique bridge between Gnawa masters, global music, and academia. This partnership with Berklee College of Music facilitates documentation and development of Gnawa art in prestigious international educational settings.

Tazi concluded by reaffirming that the festival carries a genuine Moroccan message, celebrating the country’s African identity and reinforcing culture as a potent soft power in building the future.
